About Floris Alkemade

Floris Alkemade is an architect and urban designer and he combines this work with teaching, lectures and he is part of various professional juries. He graduated with an honorable mention in Architecture at Delft University of Technology. Subsequently, he worked with Rem Koolhaas for eighteen years and was one of the six partners of the renowned Office for Metropolitan Architecture, a design agency employing approximately 350 people. In 2008 he founded his own design agency FAA and later also BAU+, operating from Sint-Oedenrode, Brussels and Paris. From 2015 to 2021 he held the position of Chief Government Architect.

He was a visiting professor at Ghent University for nine years and a lecturer at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam from 2014 to 2018. In 2018 he was chosen as Dutch Architect Of The Year. He has several publications to his name. His essay ‘The Future of the Netherlands‘ is now in its sixth edition. With the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam he published the book Rewriting Architecture, a study about the creative process that goes hand in hand with the design of reuse. In July 2021 he was a guest at VPRO’s Zomergasten.

Alkemade’s architecture and urban planning is firmly anchored in the landscape and urban structure. He works on complex projects at both national and international level. He stands out for his attention to infrastructure and logistics, as evidenced by the area development and integration of the TGV station in the center of Lille, France.

Ook thema’s als herbestemming en stedelijke ontwikkeling zijn een belangrijk onderdeel van zijn werk. Zo heeft hij gewerkt aan het nieuwe stadshart van Almere, de herontwikkeling van het wereldcultuur erfgoed van de Zeche Zollverein in het Duitse Essen waar hij ook verantwoordelijk was voor het ontwerp van het Ruhrmuseum en de herontwikkeling van het zeshonderd meter lange entrepotgebouw Macdonald in Parijs. Als Rijksbouwmeester koppelde hij deze ontwerpachtergrond aan een sterke sociaal-maatschappelijke agenda. Naast de kracht van het markt- en het politieke denken ziet hij hier een grote verantwoordelijkheid voor de ontwerp- en verbeeldingskracht.

Zoals ook uit zijn essay ‘De Toekomst van Nederland’ spreekt – met als ondertitel ‘De kunst van richting te veranderen’ – bouwt hij vanuit de ontwerpende creatieve blik een hoopvol en samenhangend verhaal op over de vele noodzakelijke veranderingen die ons te wachten staan. Vanuit de verbeeldingskracht een verlangen naar de toekomst.
