TED Speaker dr. ir. Pablo van der Lugt is a passionate advocate of high performance bio-based materials.
In the vision of van der Lugt in the essential transition towards a more circular, low-carbon economy, there are tremendous opportunities for smart bio-based materials made from fast-growing resources, such as softwood (mass timber), CLT (modified wood), and giant bamboo (engineered bamboo), to substitute carbon intensive, non-renewable materials such as metals, minerals (concrete) and plastics (PVC).
Van der Lugt is active in the building industry as senior consultant in sustainable and circular building. Besides his role in the industry, he is also a senior lecturer and ambassador in biobased building at Delft University of Technology (Environmental Technology & Design) and Amsterdam Institute for Metropolitan Solutions (collaboration TU Delft and MIT).
Van der Lugt is the author of 5 books on sustainable building, including Tomorrow’s Timber (2020) and Booming Bamboo (2017), which details the latest innovations in design and architecture using mass timber and engineered bamboo. Van der Lugt has published extensively in both, popular magazines and scientific journals, and regularly provides (keynote) presentations on this topic to stakeholders and policy makers in the building industry, including the International Climate Conference in Paris, COP 21 and COP 24 in Katowice Poland (2018).
