Royce de Vries is a media law attorney and partner at De Vries Van Spanje lawyers in Amsterdam. He guides clients in complex, often media-sensitive issues surrounding reputational damage, privacy, press freedom, online framing, and cybercrime. As an experienced media lawyer, he understands better than anyone how law and media reinforce, challenge – and sometimes collide with – each other.
In addition to his work as a lawyer and speaker, Royce is also an author. In 2023, his much-discussed book ‘I Promise You That I Will Live to One Hundred‘ – a personal and poignant story about the close bond with his father, Peter R. de Vries. The book also offers a unique insight into the period when his father acted as a confidant for key witness Nabil B. – a mission that ultimately cost him his life. The book topped the Bestseller 60 for five weeks and resonated with a wide audience.
As a speaker, Royce takes his audience into the world of law, media, and public opinion. He speaks on themes such as the power and risks of social media, trial by media, cybercrime, and press freedom – often using examples from his own practice or personal life. The themes central to his book – such as living and working under threat and his tumultuous youth – also frequently resurface. His lectures are clear, current, sometimes confrontational, but always with room for humor and vulnerability.

In this lecture – titled “Cybercrime: from balaclava to hoodie” – I discuss the rise of cybercrime, what the risks are, and what you should do if you become a victim.
