Jean-Yves Moisseron is an economist specializing in the Arab world.
He initially studied post-socialist transition by adopting institutional approaches, placing social change in a long-term perspective and emphasizing the connections between the economic, social, and political spheres of the transition.
Regarding the Arab world, he has sought to transcend disciplinary separations and epistemological traditions concerning this area, which have resulted in a certain difficulty in anticipating the Arab revolutions by mobilizing institutional economics, public action sociology, and finally, anthropology of the Arab world, and he is interested in democratic transition in the Arab world.
He teaches at the Sorbonne and at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, at the Institute for Advanced National Defense Studies.
Jean-Yves Moisseron has managed research teams as Director of the IRD Unit: Public Intervention, Space, Society, or as Director of the IRD Center in Egypt from 2002 to 2007.
He was the founder of the Mixed Research Unit “Development and Societies” (IRD-Paris 1) and responsible for the axis: “Governance, Norm, and Knowledge” of this unit.
He resided in Tunisia between 1998 and 2002, where he directed the DIRAM program (Development, Regional Integration, and Adjustment in the Mediterranean) with Tunisian partners with whom he has maintained ongoing contact.
Jean-Yves Moisseron is currently Deputy Director of the International College of Territorial Sciences.
He is also the editor-in-chief of the journal Maghreb-Machrek and regularly appears in the media.
