If you ask Denise Laan what she does, the answer can vary quite a bit. But it’s certain that her choices have led to a unique vision and approach.
Despite her love for creativity, she chose a life as a soldier with the Royal Navy. She worked for many years with the police and became a trainer and coach there as well. Nowadays, she is an entrepreneur. Writer. Mother. And known from Hunted and The Traitors and as a military specialist in a brand-new Disney format.
Fortunately, there is a common thread. People. Choices. Movement. And what happens when things go a bit differently than planned. Because Denise is immensely interested in human behaviour. Especially in the fascinating difference between what we say is important and what we actually do. We want less busyness but say yes to everything. We want more peace but pick up our phone after three seconds of boredom. We know we need to stop something. Start. Or finally make a choice. And yet, we often keep doing what we did to end up getting what we got.
In her lectures, Denise talks about leadership, attention, resilience, optimism, ownership, and living and working from your own values. Big words, which she prefers to quickly turn into plain language. Clear and straightforward.
Because resilience isn’t always getting up one more time. Sometimes it’s stopping something you already know deep down isn’t right anymore. Leadership doesn’t start with leading others, but with yourself. And optimism doesn’t mean looking at a burning house with a grin and saying it will surely be fine.
