Over Manya Koetse
Manya Koetse is een China-kenner en social-trendwatcher, alsmede de hoofdredacteur van What’s on Weibo, een internationaal goedbezochte nieuwssite die inzichten geeft in de trending topics & digitale ontwikkelingen in China.
Zij is zowel sinoloog als japanoloog (MPhil Universiteit Leiden/Peking University), en woonde langere tijd in China en Japan. Tijdens haar studie in Beijing, een stad die haar ‘tweede thuis’ werd, raakte zij geïnteresseerd in de digitale cultuur en de opzet van sociale media in China, die de afgelopen tien jaar een stormachtige transformatie hebben doorgemaakt.
Sindsdien volgt zij de Chinese trends, media, en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen op de voet. Het bracht haar op het idee om een nieuwsite op te zetten die, aan de hand van China’s online wereld, rapporteert wat er onder de Chinese bevolking leeft en hoe de overheid daarmee omgaat. What’s on Weibo (whatsonweibo.com) groeide uit van een kleinschalige blog tot een internationaal goed bezochte website (±300,000 lezers per maand) die vaak aangehaald wordt in de media, van de NOS tot de New York Times.
Naast haar werkzaamheden als redacteur en schrijver, is Manya inmiddels een veelgevraagd spreker voor nieuwsprogramma’s (BBC, Al Jazeera) en bedrijven, en specialiseert zich in de Chinese social trends, het (online) media landschap, en cultuur en maatschappij.
