Winnifred Noorlander swam across the English Channel in 17.5 hours. This followed three years of recovery from a concussion. During that period, she delved into the neuroscience of learning how to learn and discovered that any skill can be acquired.
After her recovery, she became the Head of AI at the Louwman Group, where the same knowledge about coping with change was reflected in her large-scale transformation projects. Nowadays, she teaches her audience how to better handle change, take ownership, and function in teams that perform under pressure.
Her swim to France was proof of her own learning. During the first six hours, she kept vomiting. In the eleventh hour, a jellyfish got into her swimsuit. Removing it increased the risk of missing the current due to getting out. Missing the current would mean an extra five hours of swimming. She decided to leave the jellyfish in. She passes on that lesson to her audience: under pressure, don’t lose sight of the big picture and sometimes choose short-term discomfort. The journey raised 59,000 euros for the Brain Foundation.
