From June 2021 until January 2025, Admiral Bauer served as Chair of the NATO Military Committee—the alliance’s highest military authority. With a distinguished career spanning over four decades in the Royal Netherlands Navy, Admiral Bauer has held several pivotal leadership roles. As Chief of Defence of the Netherlands (2017–2021), he led the Dutch Armed Forces through complex organisational reforms and crises. He played a key role in restoring trust and morale after years of budgetary strain and championed the modernisation of military capabilities. His advocacy for increased defence funding and his emphasis on international collaboration significantly enhanced the Netherlands’ defence posture and its contributions to NATO and UN missions.

Rob Bauer was active within NATO from June 25, 2021, to January 17, 2025, as Chairman of the Military Committee. This is NATO’s highest military advisory body and advises the North Atlantic Council on all military matters.
As Chairman, he coordinated cooperation between the defense chiefs of all NATO member states. He provided strategic military advice on collective defense, increased readiness, strengthening the eastern flank, and the revision of NATO defense plans, particularly in response to the deteriorating security situation in Europe.
Prior to his NATO role, Rob Bauer was Commander of the Armed Forces of the Netherlands (2017–2021). In that position, he was the highest-ranking military officer in the Netherlands and responsible for the operational deployment of the entire armed forces, as well as providing strategic military advice to the Minister of Defense.

Rob Bauer regularly speaks and publishes on defence, security, and international relations. In doing so, he remains an influential voice in the debate on European and transatlantic security. He is represented as a speaker by Speakers Academy. Since June 2025, he has also been affiliated with Deloitte as an Edge Fellow. In this role, he focuses on strategic issues related to security, geopolitical developments, and cooperation between public and private organisations. In addition, Bauer serves as Adjutant in Extraordinary Service to the King, an honorary appointment within the Dutch defence structure.
