From June 2021 until January 2025, Admiral Bauer served as Chair of the NATO Military Committee—the alliance’s highest military authority. In this role, he acted as principal military adviser to both the NATO Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council, guiding strategic decisions during a time of rising global tensions and instability.
With a distinguished career spanning over four decades in the Royal Netherlands Navy, Admiral Bauer has held several pivotal leadership roles. As Chief of Defence of the Netherlands (2017–2021), he led the Dutch Armed Forces through complex organisational reforms and crises. He played a key role in restoring trust and morale after years of budgetary strain and championed the modernisation of military capabilities. His advocacy for increased defence funding and his emphasis on international collaboration significantly enhanced the Netherlands’ defence posture and its contributions to NATO and UN missions.
Throughout his career, Admiral Bauer has built a reputation for steady leadership in turbulent times. He has led operational deployments in the Mediterranean and the Gulf, contributed to multinational task forces, and helped shape strategic policy at the highest political levels. His ability to unite political and military perspectives, foster international cooperation, and push for innovation has made him a trusted figure across allied nations.
Under his leadership, NATO strengthened its deterrence and defence posture, and member nations began investing more seriously in the future of collective security. Admiral Bauer’s distinguished service has been recognised with numerous international honours, including the Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau, the Grand Cross of the Spanish Cross of Naval Merit (2022), the NATO Meritorious Service Medal (2024), and the “Mihnea Constantinescu – Leadership Based on Values” trophy.
Today, Admiral Bauer is a sought-after speaker on topics such as leadership, international security, crisis management, societal resillience, and defense innovation. His unique blend of operational experience and strategic insight, combined with sharp wit and a talent for storytelling, makes him an engaging presence on stage. Celebrated as a bridge builder—between nations, between politics and the military, and across the public–private divide—he inspires audiences with thought-provoking perspectives on the future of defence, security, and global collaboration.
