From June 2021 until January 2025, Admiral Bauer served as Chair of the NATO Military Committee—the alliance’s highest military authority. In this role, he acted as principal military adviser to both the NATO Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council, guiding strategic decisions during a time of rising global tensions and instability.

With a distinguished career spanning over four decades in the Royal Netherlands Navy, Admiral Bauer has held several pivotal leadership roles. As Chief of Defence of the Netherlands (2017–2021), he led the Dutch Armed Forces through complex organisational reforms and crises. He played a key role in restoring trust and morale after years of budgetary strain and championed the modernisation of military capabilities. His advocacy for increased defence funding and his emphasis on international collaboration significantly enhanced the Netherlands’ defence posture and its contributions to NATO and UN missions.
