Marit Bouwmeester is the most successful sailor of all time. With two Olympic gold medals (Rio 2016 and Paris 2024), silver (London 2012), bronze (Tokyo 2021), and numerous world and European titles, she has dominated the international sailing sport. But behind that impressive list of achievements lies a deeper mission: showing that true victory begins in your mind.
Marit has always had a great fascination for sports psychology. “Your mind is often your biggest opponent. You cannot win if you have already lost in your mind. Winning is an inside job.” This belief forms the basis of her book Winning with Your Mind, which she co-authored with sports psychologist Nico van Yperen.
During her career, she learned that success never comes easily. Behind every achievement lie doubts, hard lessons, and moments of growth. She lost the qualification for the Beijing 2008 Games, had to continue without a coach after the ‘only’ silver success in London 2012, and went through a difficult personal period shortly before the Paris 2024 Games. Yet she always sought to take control – in her mind and on the water.
This ability to remain mentally strong is at the core of her lectures. The overarching principle is control the controllables: focusing on what you can influence and learning to accept what is beyond your control. The growth mindset plays a crucial role in this – the belief that development comes from effort, learning, and resilience. “I don’t believe in talent,” she says. “I believe in hard work, learning, and perseverance. Talent is sometimes even a handicap.”
You cannot win if you have already lost in your mind. – winning is an inside job.
In her lectures, Marit shares how you can handle pressure, setbacks, and uncertainty with that mindset. Because the real test of character does not come on easy days, but on difficult ones. Her lessons from top sports are universal: whether you are leading, teaching, or collaborating in a team, the same mental principles determine success.
