Born on December 2, 1950, in Constantine, Algeria, Benjamin Stora is a University Professor. He teaches the history of contemporary Maghreb (19th and 20th centuries), the wars of decolonization, and the history of Maghreb immigration in Europe at the University of Paris 13 and INALCO (Oriental Languages, Paris).
He holds a PhD in sociology (1978) and a State Doctorate in History (1991), and he was the founder and scientific director of the Maghreb-Europe Institute.
He was a visiting professor at New York University (NYU, 1998) and conducted research for three years in Rabat, Morocco (1998-2001) on Moroccan and Algerian nationalisms (published under the title: Morocco, Algeria, Parallel Histories, Crossed Destinies, Ed Maison neuve et Larose, 2002). He was a visiting professor at Freie Universität Berlin in 2011.
He is the author of the documentary The Algerian Years (four times one hour) broadcast in 1991 on France 2. Then, with Jean-Michel Meurice, he produced the documentary Summer 62 in Algeria, Independence with Two Faces, aired on July 7, 2002, on France 5.
Benjamin Stora received the grand prize from the CMCA – Mediterranean Center for Audiovisual Communication in 2013, in the Memory category, for the documentary with Gabriel Le Bomin: Algerian War, the Tear – Episode 1 by Benjamin Stora and Gabriel Le Bomin.
He received the LICRA award in April 2013 for his anti-racist commitments and his body of work on the history of contemporary Maghreb.
Benjamin Stora is currently the President of the Advisory Board of the Museum of Immigration.
