William Prunier is a former French footballer who played as a stopper. He was a French international (one cap for the national team in 1992). A player with a rugged temperament, his main qualities were marking and heading.
Trained at Auxerre, he was the captain of that same club in the early 1990s. After a promising start at Auxerre, he signed with Marseille, then the reigning European champion. He made his debut for the French national team and established himself within the Marseille squad. Afterwards, Prunier chose to join Bordeaux, which featured players such as Zinedine Zidane, Christophe Dugarry, and Bixente Lizarazu. Prunier left the Girondins mid-season and then had a trial at Manchester United where he played two matches as a starter.
Prunier retired from football in 2004 to become a coach. On February 4, 2004, he commented on Sky Sports about the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in 1996.
