In 2002, Castricum graduated from the School of Media in Zwolle. After an internship at RTV Rijnmond and the television program Achtste dag, he created the program Rutger Leert Stappen for TV Rijnmond in 2005 and 2006. In that program, he explored the nightlife of various demographic groups. He also produced the programs Wat is hier het nieuws, Rutger haalt de krant, and Geloof t of niet. He presented the program Branie voor twee for Radio Rijnmond. Castricum was a co-presenter on the program Op en Top Nederland, which was broadcast on the public and world broadcaster.
From 2006 to 2010, Castricum worked for the blog GeenStijl. For that website, he made videos and reports. The camera work was done by his regular cameraman Twan Melssen in the first year. On May 22, 2008, Castricum co-presented the finale of the Gouden Kooi with Bridget Maasland.
During the European Football Championship in June 2008, Castricum made reports in Austria and Switzerland for the national television channel Veronica under the name Trots Op Onze Jongens.
On New Year’s Eve 2008, Rutger was seen all evening on the same channel from Uruzgan, where he was staying at the time and making reports about the lives of Dutch soldiers.
Castricum’s fame grew after he conducted an interview for GeenStijl with former minister Ella Vogelaar about her alleged spin doctor. Vogelaar denied in the video segment that she had a spin doctor and then remained silent for several minutes in front of Castricum. The incident was declared the Political Moment of 2008 and ended up in third place in the TV program Het TV-moment van het jaar 2008.
