He soon held significant positions within the Hamburg CDU; at times, he was also a member of the party’s federal executive board. Ole von Beust was a member of the Hamburg Parliament for over twenty years, eight of which he served as the opposition leader. In 2001, he was elected as the First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. He stepped down from this role after nearly ten years. Since then, he has been working again as an independent lawyer and as a managing partner of Ole von Beust Consulting GmbH in Hamburg and Berlin.
