He studied journalism, political science, and American studies in Mainz. From 1972, he worked at ZDF, first in the news department and from 1984 in the sports department. In this role, he regularly commented on major events such as the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cups, including the final of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. In the mid-nineties, he switched to the private broadcaster RTL, where he served as the chief commentator for football events, primarily commenting on UEFA Champions League matches. Since 1999, he has been active in the same role at Sky Deutschland (formerly Premiere). Marcel Reif has been awarded multiple times as the best sports commentator in Germany (Grimme Award, German Television Award, Bavarian Television Award).
His extensive expertise and unique sense of language make him a sought-after speaker, discussion participant, and moderator.
