Born to Togolese parents, he was spotted early by the coaches of US Ivry and directed towards the Eaubonne center. With his club Ivry, he plays as a right back and right winger. Although his physique (relatively small, 1.83 m, and slender) makes him somewhat atypical for this position, it is thanks to a phenomenal reach that he can play there. He compensates with great dynamism, featuring quick and uncontrollable first steps, as well as an astonishing vertical leap. His speed and risk-taking abilities are put to use for the French national team as a right winger, a position where he succeeds Montpellier’s Grégory Anquetil.
After playing 12 seasons with US Ivry Handball, he signed during the 2007-2008 season with the renowned club Ciudad Real, the last winner of the Champions League, which he joined at the end of his contract with his longtime club, where he reunited with his teammate in the national team Didier Dinart. He was crowned Spanish champion and European champion in his first year. He managed to bring a liveliness to Ciudad Real’s game that was previously lacking in this position and took significant risks. In 2011, the club Ciudad Real became Atlético de Madrid. In July 2012, he joined Paris Saint-Germain Handball for 4 years.
Despite his young age, Luc Abalo’s record is already quite impressive, with a majority of major titles, both at the club level and with the national team. At the European level, he won the Champions League in 2009. In Spain, he secured 2 Spanish Championships (2009 and 2010) and a Copa del Rey (2011). In France, he also won the French Championship in 2007.
With the French national team, he has also shone in all global competitions. He is a two-time World Champion in 2009 and 2011; a two-time Olympic Champion (2008 and 2012); a two-time European Champion in 2006 and 2010, and won a bronze medal in 2008.
In August 2012, with “the experts”, in London, he became an Olympic Champion and thus contributed to further solidifying the French Handball team’s legacy.
