John van den Heuvel worked for nearly ten years at the Amsterdam police before becoming a crime reporter at Dagblad De Telegraaf in 1990. At the city police force, he held various positions in uniformed services, investigation, riot police, and the staff department for Information and Publicity. He was also an undercover agent for two years, during which Van den Heuvel gathered evidence against drug dealers through infiltration in the drug world.
As a crime reporter, Van den Heuvel has authored dozens of striking reports on the underworld. He described the backgrounds of assassinations, unmasked drug lords like Desi Bouterse, and exposed money laundering practices. His revealing articles for De Telegraaf provided new insights into sensational criminal cases involving the Hells Angels, Willem Holleeder, the Zwarte Cobra, and other criminal figures.
Since 2001, John van den Heuvel has been a regular crime expert on the popular TV program RTL Boulevard. He also comments on crime in the highly listened-to program ‘Evers staat op’ by Edwin Evers on Radio 538. John van den Heuvel has authored five crime bestsellers: ‘Recht in de ogen van Abraham Moszkowicz’ (1998), ‘De jacht op Desi Bouterse’ (1999), ‘Sneeuw over Curaçao’ (2001), ‘Vergelding, verduistering en Verraad’ (2005), and ‘Doden liegen niet’ (2007).
John van den Heuvel now has 8 crime bestsellers to his name. (In addition to the previously mentioned titles, these include): ‘Dossier Van den Heuvel’ (2006), ‘Tijdperk Willem Holleeder’ (2008), and ‘De Gevallen Engel’ (2009). His book about Holleeder and 25 years of polder mafia was the best-selling journalistic book of 2008.
In the past two years, Van den Heuvel also had his own TV programs; ‘Bureau Misdaad’ on RTL5 and ‘Bureau Van den Heuvel’ on Nederland 1. He also hosted various successful TV programs over the years, such as Bureau Misdaad (2005), Bureau Van den Heuvel (2006), Crime Time (2008), and RTL Exclusief (2009). For SBS6, he presented the highly viewed consumer program Das je Goed Recht in 2009.
