Graduated from Sciences Po Paris after hypokhâgne and khâgne, with a master’s degree in law and a DEA in international economics, he is currently President of Les Cahiers Verts de l’économie, an independent investment strategy consulting organization.
He was previously Director of Economic Research and Strategy at Exane-BNP Paribas, the leading French brokerage firm for institutional clients, from October 1999 to January 2009.
He had previously (1995-1999) been Deputy Director of Economic Studies at BNP (and, in this capacity, a member of BNP’s Steering Committee on the euro), deputy director at the Banque de France (notably in the Studies Department from 1990 to 1994) and consultant for the International Monetary Fund.
He took over the company Socofi (“Les Cahiers Verts de l’économie”), an independent research firm (composed of five economists/analysts) previously founded by Marc de Scitivaux, specializing in economic research and investment strategy.

In 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, Jean Pierre Petit was voted Best Market Economist at the Grands Prix de l’analyse financière organized by Extel-Agefi in France with a vote by more than 700 institutional investors).
His book “La Bourse, rupture et renouveau” received in March 2004 (at the Palais du Luxembourg) the Grand Prix (Turgot) for the best financial economics book of 2003, a book chosen by a committee of 18 members out of 70 pre-selected.
His book “La finance autrement” also received the special Turgot prize in March 2006. On this occasion, he also received an honorary award for achieving the first “Double” of the Turgot prize.
He is a columnist for Le Monde, l’Expansion, l’Agefi, Investir, and Banque magazine, and was also a columnist for Le Figaro. He also appears quite regularly on BFM Business and Radio-classique.
