Jan Lammers, director of the Dutch Grand Prix, takes you into the world of Formula 1, highlighting the differences between then and now.
World’s most versatile racing driver Jan Lammers worked as a child at the skid school of Rob Slotemaker. In 1973, at the age of 16, he made his debut and won his first race in Zandvoort. Jan Lammers has since won 11 national and international championships, achieved victories in Touring Cars, Sports Cars, and Formula cars, and has a total of approximately 150 podium finishes. Currently, Jan Lammers is the sporting director of the Grand Prix of Zandvoort in 2020.
At the age of 17, Jan Lammers won the Dutch Touring Car Championship. Five years later, he broke through internationally. 1978 was the year of Jan Lammers’ first major international success. He became European Champion in Formula 3, defeating Alain Prost, the future F1 world champion. Shortly thereafter, in 1980, Jan became the best-qualified Dutch F1 driver ever with a 4th place during the GP USA West in Long Beach with ATS. In 1983, Jan Lammers made the switch to Sports Cars. And with success. During the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Jan drove for 13 of the 24 hours, crossed the finish line first, and defeated the previously unbeaten brand Porsche (since 1982). In 1992, 10 years after his season seemed over, something unique happened.
Jan Lammers made his comeback in Formula 1. He did this during the Grand Prix in Japan. To this day, this is a record; no other driver has made a comeback in F1 after 10 years.
In 1999, Jan Lammers founded his own Sports Cars team: Racing for Holland. Racing for Holland became FIA World Sportscar Champion twice. Jan stood on the podium three times during the prestigious Formula 3 race in Macau; once 2nd, twice 3rd, and once 6th. Another remarkable record, Jan once raced 7 races in a day. Nowadays, Jan occasionally drives a demo at the Zandvoort circuit. Furthermore, he is active with his Racing Team Holland in the 24h of Le Mans and the European Le Mans series. He has now raced in this legendary event 24 times!! Jan Lammers is currently also the director of the Dutch Grand Prix, which returned to the calendar in 2020 after 35 years of absence.
With his statement ‘Success must be managed’, Jan Lammers inspires and motivates during his presentations. He speaks about racing, ranging from his own experiences as a driver to Formula 1 and everything that comes with it, but there are also many parallels with the business world. It can be about teamwork, speed and quality, performing under pressure, and dealing with fears. Through his experiences during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Jan Lammers can also speak very well about a 24-hour mentality and what it means.
