Heiner Brand, the likable face of success, became World Champion as the head coach of the German men’s handball national team in 2007. Thus, he became the first handball player ever to win the World Championship both as a player in 1978 and as a coach in 2007.
The business graduate won everything that national and international handball titles and trophies have to offer with VfL Gummersbach, which was long regarded as the FC Bayern of handball, as a player from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. As a coach, he won multiple German championships with VfL Gummersbach and SG Wallau Massenheim.
He became known beyond handball circles as the head coach of the national team that became European Champion in 2004. Heiner Brand was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, the Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Silver Laurel Leaf. For his sporting lifetime achievements, his humanitarian activities, and his contributions to the reputation of German sports in the world, he was awarded the “Golden Sports Pyramid” in 2007. In the same year, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports. Since July 1, 2011, he has been the Director/Manager of the German Handball Federation.
