Philosopher, sociologist, and historian of religions. Associate researcher at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS).
Editorial director of the magazine Le Monde des religions (a bimonthly publication owned by the Le Monde group). Producer and host on France Culture of the weekly program Les Racines du ciel.
Author of around thirty works (essays, encyclopedias, novels), translated into about twenty languages and sold over three million copies, he is also a scriptwriter of comic books and author of a play.
He divides his time between Paris and Provence, where he writes his books.
