Writer Ferran Torrent moves between the black novel and the specialization in local customs. Alongside his novels, he has created a world and several fiction characters that portray the sub-world of current Valencia. In fact, Valencia has become one more character in his novels and a mirror in which all the citizens can see themselves in and their environment.
Torrent’s novels are created with a very personal style and a particular variety of Catalan, the one used in Horta’s region and in Valencia city. This rich and modern language has allowed agile and cutting dialogues that had been able to portray the real Valencian lifestyle. His works have been translated into German, Spanish, French and Italian.
The success of Torrents work can be noticed by the several prizes he has won. In 1994 he won the Premi Sant Jordi, the most important literature prize in the Catalan language with his book Gràcies per la propina (Thank you for the tip). In 2002 he won the Premi Crexells and in 2003 the Premi Crítica Serra d’Or de novel·la both with Societat Limitada (Limited Company). With La vida en el abismo (The life in the abyss) he was finalist for Premio Planeta 2004.
His works in literature have crossed the pages of the books and become films. Self-participation in his own scriptis is nothing new for Torrent – he had played in the scripts of Gràcies per la propina (Thanks for the tip), Un negre amb un saxo (A black guy with a saxo), La vida a l’abisme (The life in the abyss) i L’illa de l’holandés (Dutch’s island).
As a journalist, his presence is also constant in different media through articles, chroniques and radio programmes. Additionally, he has also participated in different radio, cinema and television scripts. Torrent has also worked as a columnist in El Temps, El País, La Vanguardia and nowadays he has his own space at Diari Ara.
For a sharp and direct point of view about the current issues that play an important role in the politics and social life in Valencia, Catalonia and Spain, Torrent will share with you all the hot news. Torrent says: “I am more inspired in a dole than in a cultural association. I enjoy myself more between any kind of women than between wise and intellectual people. I rather be in a whorehouse than sitting in a chair of an academy. The intellectuals and the politicians are the species I get more bored with”.
