Diederik Jekel explains the natural sciences in an unparalleled way on radio, television, the internet, and in a book. He obtained his master’s degree in solid-state physics in 2010 and briefly conducted research at the University of Twente. In October 2010, he had the opportunity to talk about science on De Wereld Draait Door, and since then he has been a full-time science journalist. He gives presentations on science and communication to children, adults, industry professionals, scientists, and managers.
During his studies, he did a lot to popularize science. Guest lectures and workshops for students from primary school to sixth-grade high school, scientific theater pieces, tutoring, and much more. At the end of 2010, Diederik first appeared on De Wereld Draait Door to talk about the Nobel Prizes. Since then, he has been there more than ten times and is now a regular guest when it comes to science. He has written many articles for the scientific site Noorderlicht of the VPRO and has created and presented several television programs, including: Met de Kennis van Nu, Huisje Boompje Beestje, NOS Journaal, and De Nationale Wetenschapsquiz Junior. He has had dozens of appearances on radio and television, explaining science to every possible audience.
In addition to his work on TV, radio, and the internet, he has written a book and given dozens of presentations. Often scientific lectures for a broad audience at Lowlands, the Museum Night, TEDxAmsterdam, and much more. Due to his experience in explaining complex subjects to a wide audience, he is often asked to provide communication training. Media training for PhD candidates and tips on how to better explain their field. Coming from the academic world and now working in the media industry, he has a unique perspective on what both worlds want. He has also served as a chairperson at conferences with diverse backgrounds such as psychology conferences, engineering conferences, physics conferences, and management conferences.
His presentation style is often casual, relaxed, and very focused on the specific audience and the world they live in. Both in a normal style and Pecha Kucha presentations are familiar to him. Besides discussing many serious topics, he also presents in more relaxed settings, such as at a science quiz. In short, a versatile speaker, chairperson, and presenter who can conduct workshops for dozens of people, but also for a television audience of millions.
