Dr. Christoph von Marschall is the Diplomatic Correspondent of the editorial team at Tagesspiegel (Berlin) and an expert on German-American relations. His observations on the typical misunderstandings in this relationship and the differences in political cultures resonate strongly with companies and financial service providers active on both sides of the Atlantic, including in employee training. He is among the best German-speaking experts on President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, whom he closely followed as a member of the White House Press Corps until 2013. President Obama granted him the first interview for a German medium in June 2011. Due to his entertaining insights behind the scenes of the White House, von Marschall is often booked for client events.
After studying Eastern European history and political science in Freiburg, Mainz, Krakow, and completing his doctorate as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation, von Marschall began his journalistic career in 1989 at the Süddeutsche Zeitung. He reported from Hungary on the mass exodus of East German citizens to the West as well as the fall of communism in Romania and Bulgaria. In 1991, he moved to the “Tagesspiegel,” where he led the opinion section for ten years while also accompanying the integration of the new democracies in Eastern Central Europe into NATO and the EU. As Washington Bureau Chief, he traveled to all 50 US states starting in 2005. Since his return in 2013, he has been observing the geostrategic shifts between Europe, Eastern Europe, the USA, and Asia as the Chief Diplomatic Correspondent.
Von Marschall regularly comments on Deutschlandfunk, writes for the magazine “Cicero,” “Die Zeit,” and “Atlantic Times,” and is a guest on the ARD Press Club. His journalistic work has received multiple awards. In 2002, he received the German-American Commentary Prize for his prescient commentary on the consequences of the September 11, 2001 attacks. In 2005, he was awarded the German-Polish Journalist Prize and the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his contributions to German-Polish reconciliation. In 2010, the Steuben-Schurz Society honored him with its media prize.
In his lectures, von Marschall captivates audiences with a vivid and knowledgeable examination of the power dynamics in the USA and Europe. He compellingly analyzes the political, economic, and social dynamics along with the challenges that arise from them for the world.
He lectures in German, English, and Polish.
