Born in 1969, Benoist Apparu is a French politician. He was appointed on June 23, 2009, as Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Planning, and later became Minister of Housing until May 2012. He was elected deputy for the second time in June 2012. Benoist Apparu became involved in politics early on, first as a parliamentary assistant at the National Assembly from 1994 to 1999. He was also appointed President of the Young RPR in 1996. From 1999 to 2002, he worked in a large advertising group.

About Benoist Apparu

Benoist Apparu became involved in politics early on, first as a parliamentary assistant at the National Assembly from 1994 to 1999. He was also appointed President of the Young RPR in 1996. From 1999 to 2002, he worked in a large advertising group where he was notably in charge of agri-food issues.

Since 2001, Benoist Apparu has been Deputy Mayor of Châlons-en-Champagne, in the Marne. Initially responsible for youth and communication, he took on sustainable development in 2008. He is currently in charge of major development projects, intercommunal development, and metropolitan issues. Since 2008, he has also been Vice-President of the Agglomeration Community, delegated to the environment and sustainable development.

In 2002, Benoist Apparu continued his career by working within ministries. First as Chief of Staff to Xavier Darcos at the Ministry of Education and later at the Ministry of Cooperation. Between 2005 and 2007, he served as advisor and then Deputy Director of the cabinet of the Minister for Social Cohesion, Catherine Vautrin. In June 2007, he was elected deputy for the 4th constituency of the Marne. Very committed to education and higher education issues, he was the rapporteur for the law on university autonomy as early as July 2007. More recently, he submitted a report on high school reform.

In 1999, he published a work on François Mitterrand, Les présidents de la Ve République – François Mitterrand, 1981-1999 with Editions Archer Val De France. He also co-authored a book with Bruno Julliard, Faut-il plus de compétition à la Fac ?, Paris, Éditions Magnard, coll. “L’avenir de nos enfants en question(s)”, 2009. In 2011, a book in the form of an interview on housing issues was published: La ville est-elle politique? an interview between Benoist Apparu and Jean-Yves Mano, Éditions Archibooks, collection directed by Isabelle Rey-Lefevre.

Benoist Apparu also teaches courses at Science Po on political institutions and housing policy.
