Professional storyteller, interviewer, and chairperson
Bart Gielen studied history at the University of Amsterdam. As a passionate historian, he has appeared/heard in De straten van Amsterdam (AT5), Rare Jongens (BNNVARA), Koffietijd (RTL 4), the radio program OVT (VPRO), and at the theater festival De Parade with the performance Hysterisch Historisch. He also presented various TV items for National Geographic, including the History Month (see: video). Bart writes popular science articles on a variety of historical topics for National Geographic, Quest, Telegraaf, and other media (see: publications). Furthermore, he is the chairperson and host of his literary talk show Barts BoekenClub (BBC).
In 2008, Bart completed the postgraduate program to become a First-Class History Teacher with honors. From 2009 to 2019, he was associated with the Hogeschool van Amsterdam as a subject didactic and teacher trainer, after which he continued independently. Bart sees it as his mission to connect a broad audience with the past through various disciplines. As a professional storyteller, he demonstrates that history is anything but boring and dusty; rather, it is fun, educational, and relevant! He is able to explain complex historical themes clearly and unequivocally with a link to current events. With his extensive historical knowledge and interests, he can create a tailored history story for companies and institutions. On his YouTube channel A la Bart Producties, various videos can be viewed about history, literature, and human interest stories.
On stage, during lectures and presentations, and as a chairperson, Bart feels like a fish in water. Due to his expertise, broad knowledge, thorough preparation, and charm, Bart is frequently invited to various (literary) events, such as the Uitmarkt in Amsterdam, Murakami Weekend, 100 Years Betondorp, and the National Veterans Lecture (see: video).
Bart is also a professional interviewer. He knows how to create a relaxed atmosphere, and through his genuine interest, he consistently elicits surprising statements. Since 2014, he has organized and hosted Barts BoekenClub, a monthly full-length literary theater performance featuring candid conversations and live music by singer-songwriters. He has hosted many prominent guests, including Sonja Barend, Herman Pleij, Midas Dekkers, Paul van Vliet, Tommy Wieringa, Maarten van Rossem, and Paulien Cornelisse (see: video).
