About André Kaspi

Former student of Lycée Henri-IV, agrégé in history in 1961, André Kaspi is the author of two notable theses, one on Jean Monnet and the other on American aid to France during World War I.

He taught North American history at the Sorbonne from 1998 to 2006, when he became professor emeritus. At the same time, he directed the Center for North American History Research and held several positions within the CNRS.

André Kaspi is the founder of the Society for North American Studies, which he presided over from 1988 to 1992. The following year, he was appointed president of the interministerial commission on IUFM. He also served as president of the Institute of Contemporary International Relations from 1994 to 2000 and president of the Reflection Commission on the modernization of public commemorations in 2007/2008.

André Kaspi is the author of numerous works and has also contributed to the Encyclopædia Universalis. Among his publications, one can note a biography of Franklin Roosevelt (1986), several books on John Kennedy, a study on “The Death Penalty in the United States,” and another, highly regarded, on “American Jews” (2008). Among his recent books, we note, in 2012, a “History of American Presidents” in collaboration with Hélène Harter, as well as “Barack Obama, the Great Disillusionment.”

André Kaspi retired from academia in 2006. He is currently the deputy mayor of the UMP municipality of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in charge of culture. In 2005, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
