About Bernard Kouchner

Bernard Kouchner, born on November 1, 1939, in Avignon, is a humanitarian doctor and French politician, co-founder of Doctors Without Borders and Doctors of the World, and minister in various left and right governments. A trained doctor (gastroenterologist), Bernard Kouchner has had an activist life, which led him to join the Union of Communist Students in the early 1960s, the Socialist Party, the Radical Left Party, and then back to the Socialist Party. An advocate for humanitarian action and the right of intervention, he has served multiple times as Secretary of State and Minister (Humanitarian Action, Health) in the socialist governments of Michel Rocard, Édith Cresson, Pierre Bérégovoy, and Lionel Jospin. From 1999 to 2001, he held the position of High Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo. From May 18, 2007, to November 13, 2010, Bernard Kouchner served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs in the governments of François Fillon I and Fillon II under the ‘openness’ policy practiced by UMP President Nicolas Sarkozy.
