Hervé de Charette

About Hervé de Charette

French politician, Hervé de Charette has been a Deputy for Maine-et-Loire (6th constituency) since 1988 and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly. He currently sits with the Nouveau Centre group. He has been the mayor of the municipality of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil since 1989.

A former student of ENA (Montesquieu promotion), he is also a graduate of the École des Hautes Études Commerciales – HEC and the IEP of Paris. He joined the Council of State as an auditor in June 1966, appointed as a master of petitions in 1973, and successively held the positions of rapporteur and then deputy secretary-general at the Council of State.

From 1973 to 1981, he directed numerous ministerial cabinets. He was appointed to the presidency of SONACOTRA from 1979 to 1981. At the same time, at the request of Mr. Valery Giscard d’Estaing, he began active political engagement in 1977 within the Republican Party.

In 1989, he was General Delegate of the National Federation of Clubs Perspectives and Realities, a component of the UDF. In this capacity, Hervé de Charette served as Delegate President of the UDF. In 2002, he was a member of the council of founders of the UMP. He also presides over the Democratic Convention, a political think tank of the Center.

– from 1986 to 1988, he was Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, responsible for Public Service and Planning,

– then from 1993 to 1995: Minister of Housing in the government of Edouard Balladur and Minister of Foreign Affairs,

– from 1995 to 1997 in the government of Alain Juppé

He founded the Euro-Mediterranean Institute in 2004. He has presided over the Franco-Arab Chamber of Commerce since June 2008. He is the author of two works: “Ouragan sur la République” – 1993 and “Lyautey” – 1995.
