Josef Joffe is uitgever-redacteur van het Duitse weekblad ‘Die Zeit’. Voorheen was hij columnist/redacteur van de opiniepagina van de Süddeutsche Zeitung (1985-2000).

Zijn essays en recensies zijn verschenen in: New York Review of Books, New York Times Book Review, Times Literary Supplement, Commentary, New York Times Magazine, New Republic, Slate, Weekly Standard, Prospect (Londen), Commentaire (Parijs). Regelmatig bijdrager aan de opiniepagina’s van Wall Street Journal, New York Times en Washington Post; Time en Newsweek.

Zijn tweede carrière heeft zich in de academische wereld afgespeeld. In 2007 werd hij benoemd tot Senior Fellow van het Stanford Institute for International Studies (een professorale functie), waarmee hij sinds 1999 is verbonden. Aan Stanford is hij ook Courtesy Professor of Political Science en Fellow in International Relations aan de Hoover Institution (2004–). Hij heeft lesgegeven aan Harvard, Johns Hopkins en de Universiteit van München; gastdocent aan Princeton en Dartmouth.

In 2005 was hij medeoprichter van het tijdschrift voor buitenlands beleid The American Interest in Washington (samen met Zbigniew Brzezinski, Elliott Cohen en Francis Fukuyama), waar hij deel uitmaakt van het Uitvoerend Comité.

Zijn meest recente boek is Überpower: America’s Imperial Temptation (2006, vertaald in het Duits, Frans en Chinees). Zijn artikelen zijn verschenen in Foreign Affairs, The National Interest, International Security, The American Interest en Foreign Policy, evenals in vakbladen in Duitsland, Groot-Brittannië en Frankrijk. Hij is de auteur van The Limited Partnership: Europe, the United States and the Burdens of Alliance, The Future of International Politics: The Great Powers; co-auteur van Eroding Empire: Western Relations With Eastern Europe.
