Volker Perthes is a political scientist and the Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.
After studying political science, Perthes conducted research in Damascus, Syria, and earned his doctorate in 1990 at the University of Duisburg. From 1991 to 1993, he worked as an assistant professor at the American University of Beirut and taught at the universities of Duisburg, Münster, and Munich. In 1999, he completed his habilitation.
Since 1992, Volker Perthes has been working for the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin; since October 2005, he has been its director. He also teaches as an adjunct professor at Humboldt University and as an honorary professor at Free University Berlin and is a member of several scientific advisory boards, including the Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS). He is a highly sought-after commentator in German and international media.
