Nicknamed ‘The Incomparable’ by his peers in French and international rugby, Philippe Sella is one of the greatest professional players in French rugby.
Having started with rugby league until his cadet years, he played in France for RC Clairac, then for Sporting Union Agenais, and finally abroad for Saracens. In 1998, he became the first French player to play in England. He won the major titles in France and England: French Champion in 1982 and 1988 (finalist in 1984, 1986, and 1990), winner of the Yves du Manoir Challenge in 1983 and 1992, Vice-Champion of England in 1998, and Winner of the English Cup in 1998.
His career was also crowned with success on the international stage through his performances with the French national team. Between 1982 and 1995, he was called up 111 times in the blue jersey, 4 times as captain, notably playing 45 consecutive matches between 1982 and 1987 and scoring 30 tries. With this French team, he accumulated successes and recognitions:
– World Cup: 2nd place in 1987, 3rd place in 1995, and quarter-finalist in 1991.
– Winner of the Five Nations Tournament in 1983, 1986, 1987 (Grand Slam), 1988, 1989, and 1993.
– Top try scorer of the tournament in 1984 and 1986.
Philippe Sella has been recognized by his peers and by specialized observers and journalists: he was named the best player of the Five Nations Tournament in 1986, scoring a try against each of them. Throughout his career, he also defeated all the teams in the world and scored at least one try against each of them. In 1987, he was recognized as the best center of the World Cup and the best French center in 1984, from 1986 to 1990, in 1992, 1994, and 1995.
Following his playing career, Philippe Sella continues to be present in the world of rugby and among professionals. He is indeed the co-manager and founder of Sella Communication, he is a consultant on Canal+, and since November 2007, he has been leading the French under-20 team. Also recognized by the general public and by the nation, Philippe Sella was awarded the National Order of Merit in 1994.
