Peter studied physics at the University of Groningen and earned his PhD as a polar researcher in 2009 at Utrecht University. He currently works there as a university lecturer and leads research on the melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica. Additionally, he delves into extreme weather, climate change, and science communication. Since 2013, he has worked as a weather presenter for NOS. In addition to the daily weather forecast, he also provides insights for NOS on news related to climate and extreme weather.
He does this for an incredibly broad audience, from Jeugdjournaal to Nieuwsuur. He produced 30 episodes of the podcast The Weatherman, and went on two major theater tours with pianist Ralph van Raat, discussing meteorology and climate even at the Concertgebouw. Every three weeks, you can read his columns in the science section of NRC Handelsblad.
