Docteur Jean-Claude Guimberteau

Dr. Jean-Claude Guimberteau was born in 1947. A plastic surgeon and pioneer in microsurgical transplantation, he is a member of the National Academy of Surgery. He founded the Institut Aquitain de la Main (1980), served as the 2012 President of the French Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, and was a former member of the Haute Autorité de Santé. Initially, Dr. Guimberteau was simply seeking a new technical method for reconstructing the flexor tendons of the fingers. He discovered that the tissue ensuring the efficiency of sliding is composed of a network of fibrils distributed in a completely disordered manner, without apparent logic. This was a revelation for him, as his Cartesian and logical mind struggled to accept that chaos and efficiency could coexist. Thus began an unexpected intellectual journey, leading him away from the calm shores of classical analytics taught to surgeons, into a little-known, fractal, and chaotic world. For over 15 years, he has been filming the inside of human tissues with a contact endoscope during surgical procedures to better understand this universe beneath the skin. These images, captured in vivo rather than in a laboratory, show us our living matter as it truly is. Now, technology allows for a representation not born from imagination but from observed reality. The living human inside the tissues has never been filmed before. Living matter can be seen, and its exploration will undoubtedly be a scientific endeavor bringing significant changes in perception in the coming decades. Dr. J.C. Guimberteau has been giving lectures in French, English, or Spanish worldwide for years.
