Jaap Dirkmaat (1958) was assigned to work at the National Institute for Nature Management in 1980 as a conscientious objector. In 1981, he co-founded Vereniging Das&Boom and has been its chairman ever since. Due to its success – in addition to protecting the badger, the hamster was also saved – the association changed its name in 2006 to Vereniging Nederlands Cultuurlandschap with the new objective of restoring and preserving the cultural landscape.
At the beginning of 2011, Dirkmaat revitalized Das&Boom. The budget cuts on nature policy by the Rutte I cabinet necessitated Das&Boom to expand its legal activities across the board once again.
In addition to his lobbying activities, Dirkmaat regularly works on publications about his field. In these, he critically examines current policies but also passionately demonstrates what is possible in the landscape and how we can achieve it.
Dirkmaat is nationally recognized as the face of Das&Boom and Vereniging Nederlands Cultuurlandschap. He frequently gives lectures, often participates in panels and forums during conferences and study days, and is regularly heard on radio and TV discussing nature and environmental issues.
Dirkmaat’s contribution to nature is acknowledged by his rising position in the Sustainable 100, reaching 15th place in 2012.
