Felix Finkbeiner (17) conceived his vision during a 4th-grade school presentation on the topic of ‘climate crisis’: Let’s plant a million trees in every country on Earth. Inspired by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai (2011), he calls on all children of the world to join in planting. Children from over 100 countries respond to the call and together establish the children and youth initiative Plant-for-the-Planet.
In academies (one-day workshops), children encourage other children to take their future into their own hands. By the year 2020, the now 30,000 ‘Ambassadors for Climate Justice’ aim to inspire one million other children and have planted one trillion trees – that’s 150 per person. In a two-year consultation, the children develop a 3-point plan to save their future. Condensed into four words, it reads: ‘Stop talking. Start planting.’
With this globally functioning campaign, the 3-point plan, and the transparency of all promised and planted trees, the young global citizens ask government leaders, business executives, and citizens to support them in their fight for their future. In December 2011, UNEP handed over the responsibility for its Billion Tree Campaign to the children, who thus continue the official tree counter of the world, which now stands at nearly 13 billion planted trees.
