Fabien Galthié was born on March 20, 1969, in Cahors. After starting his career in the sports-study section of the Collège Clémence Isaure in Toulouse, he joined the Training Center of U.S. Colomiers. A talented scrum-half, he played with Colomiers until 2001, when he joined Stade Français. His career with the France XV began in 1991. With the arrival of Bernard Laporte as coach of the France XV, he became captain and won the Grand Slam of the Six Nations Tournament in 2002. He was also named Player of the Year by the IRB. In 2004, he transitioned to coaching, becoming the coach of Stade Français. After a stint in Argentina, he joined MHR in 2010.
