Born in 1952, he is the Director of the European Academy Berlin and teaches Political Science at the Free University of Berlin.
Eckart Stratenschulte studied Political Science, Sociology, German Studies, and Education in Marburg, completing these studies with a diploma in Sociology and a state examination for teaching at secondary schools in the subjects of German and Social Studies. After obtaining his doctorate in Sociology, he became a lecturer at the Institute for Inter-European Studies in Berlin in 1978, where he took over the leadership in 1982. In 1989, he transitioned to the Senate Chancellery of the Governing Mayor of Berlin as Head of the Film, Radio, Television Department, before taking over the leadership of the European Academy Berlin in mid-1993. Since 1999, Eckart Stratenschulte has been a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin, which appointed him as an honorary professor in 2005. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate in Ukraine and received honors in Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Romania.
Eckart Stratenschulte has published numerous works on European and contemporary historical topics and is a regular interview partner for European media. He is invited across Europe as a speaker on European topics and as a moderator for events and discussions. Alternating with his colleague Andrea Despot, he is the moderator of the weekly television talk show “Europazeit” on TV Berlin.
