Diederik Gommers, Head of the Intensive Care Department at Erasmus MC and former Chairman of the Dutch Society for Intensive Care (NVIC), needs no further introduction. The coronavirus crisis made him a well-known figure in the Netherlands as a guest on numerous talk shows.
Diederik completed his training as an intensivist at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. He earned his PhD in 1998 under Burkhard Lachmann with the dissertation Factors affecting surfactant responsiveness, and in 2014, Diederik Gommers was appointed as a special professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
In addition to his hospital role, Diederik was a member of the Outbreak Management Team and advises the Cabinet. During his TV appearances and contributions in the House of Representatives, he vividly illustrated how the ICUs in the Netherlands were filling up with COVID-19 patients and the impact of this.
