Stop Chasing Happiness: Why Being a Little Happier Is Enough
What if happiness didn’t have to be another goal to achieve?
When we treat happiness as a finish line, every ordinary day can feel like evidence that we have not arrived. We compare, optimise and keep asking what more would make life feel complete. Research suggests that valuing happiness very highly can even make people feel less happy. The pressure to feel good can become one more source of pressure.
In my book Vähän onnellinen (A Little Happier), published in Finnish by Otava in September 2026, I explore a gentler idea: happiness does not mean feeling joyful all the time. It can be a sense of safety, connection and meaning in an imperfect everyday life. Sometimes “good enough” is not settling. It is recognising what is already holding us up.
The same applies at work. Sustainable performance is not about pushing harder every day and recovering only when the work is done. It depends on whether people can pause, ask for help and speak up when demands become too much. A 2022 meta-analysis found that short breaks can reduce fatigue and support energy, although it did not find a reliable overall performance boost. No breathing exercise can compensate for an unsustainable workload or a workplace where it feels unsafe to be honest.
Try a few small questions this week:
- What would make today feel a little more manageable?
- What can I leave for tomorrow, or share with someone else?
- As a leader: what is one pressure we could remove, and how can I make it safer to raise concerns?
These are small ways to create room for recovery, self-compassion and more realistic expectations. Repeated over time, they can help people work with care and ambition without treating their wellbeing as expendable.
Being a little happier is enough to begin. It gives us permission to build a life—and a way of working—with room for both meaningful effort and recovery.
