Sylvain Ephimenco was born in 1956 in Algeria, then a French department. Between 1981 and 1998 he worked as a correspondent in the Netherlands for the French left-wing newspaper Liberation. Ephimenco became in 1992 a columnist for a daily newspaper. He wrote for several newspapers essays and reflections. As a columnist, he is linked to several Dutch newspapers. He has published several essays and columns, as well as an open letter to the Muslims of the Netherlands (2001). Ephimenco is often regarded as a watcher of the Netherlands. With his foreign perspective on the Netherlands he doesn’t back down for a sharp and controversial analysis on many social problems and trends.
