Gerald L. Curtis is Burgess Professor Emeritus at Columbia University and former Director of Columbia’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute. He is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading authority on Japanese politics, foreign policy, political economy and on US relations with Japan and Asia.

He is the author of numerous books and articles written in both English and Japanese and published in numerous languages. His commentaries appear frequently in the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Asahi Shimbun, and other newspapers, journals, and visual media around the globe. He serves as advisor and consultant to public and private organizations in both the United States and Japan.

Fluent in Japanese, he is well known to Japanese for his commentaries published in the Japanese press and appearances on Japanese television news programs. He is the recipient of numerous prizes and honors including the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Emperor of Japan, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Japanese government.
